LAST CHANCE FOR SAUGERTIES RESIDENTS TO COMMENT ON MINING-RELATED ZONING AMENDMENT
The final public hearing on a proposed
Zoning Law amendment that would prohibit mining in residentially zoned areas will
take place on Thursday, October 11th at 6:30 p.m. at the Saugerties High School
Auditorium on Washington Street. CARES (Citizens Action for Residential Environments
in Saugerties), a citizensı group formed to combat a proposed large-scale commercial
mining operation in the Veteran-Blue Mountain area of Saugerties is continuing
to inform the public about the amendment and galvanize wide-spread support for
its adoption.
"It is crucial that residents
from every corner of our town show up at this meeting and make it clear to the
Town Board that commercial mining operations should be prohibited in our residentially-zoned
areas," said CARES member Patti Kelly. "October 11th will be our last
chance to make an impression on the board before they vote, so the importance
of a large turnout at this meeting can not be overstated."
Should the Town adopt the amendment, mining would be eliminated as a permitted
use in all residential areas. Mining is already, under the law, allowed by special
use permit in highway business zones and industrial zones, and that would not
change.
Howie Wittenbecher, a long-time Saugerties
resident and CARES member, says the mining threat has brought about a more unified
community willing to stand up for preserving the town's unique quality of life.
"Folks are telling our Town Board that clean air and clean water have value.
The safety of our community's children has value. Itıs been remarkable to hear
such impassioned comments to the board, and it makes me so proud to live in a
town that is willing to fight for what's important."
CARES urges all Saugerties residents to attend the October 11th public hearing.
The Town Board will also accept written comments on the proposed zoning amendment.
