Village not ready to support group against mining

DAILY FREEMAN Tuesday, August 21, 2001 REGIONAL (A3) - by Ariel Zangla, Correspondent

SAUGERTIES - The Village Board has tabled a decision on whether to support opposition to a proposed mining operation in a residential area in the hamlet of Veteran. At a meeting Monday night, village Mayor Robert Yerick said he was not prepared to back an anti-mining group because he hasn't had a chance to research the matter. Yerick said the village had received a letter from the group Citizens Action for Residential Environments in Saugerties asking the board to pass a resolution opposing the mining operation. The group argued that the operation could harm the village's water lines and storage tank. Yerick said he had been away for a week and had no time to look into whether the mine would affect the village. He said that unless the three trustees present were prepared to vote against the resolution, he would like to table the decision. Two trustees said they were ready to vote, but agreed to table the discussion until the board's next meeting.
