Thursday
July 19
Town Supervisor
Greg Helsmoortel, in answer to a question from Brian Donoghue,
at the Saugerties Town Board meeting of Wed. July 18, 2001
announced that the Town of Saugerties will act to get Lead
Agency status on the Shott mining proposal. Mr. Helsmoortel
said that "our chances of getting back Lead Agency status
is extremely good, in that it may not have been requested
properly."
This is great news for C.A.R.E.S because
if the town were the Lead Agency, there would be a complete
and thorough review of all facets of the mining operation.
A review done by the Town would make sure that the many misstatements,
understatements, and nonstatements in the Shott proposal will
be looked at carefully. Furthermore, even if the Town is unable
to reobtain Lead Agency status at this time, such a request
sends a message to the DEC that the Town of Saugerties wants
to be involved and will not be bowled over. Remember DEC is
in the business of granting permits. DEC turns down a miniscule
number of mining applicants. If DEC is the Lead Agency, the
odds are that they will approve Shott's proposal without addressing
many of CARES concerns.
OUR FIRST PUBLIC MEETING
Monday July 16
Over
70 concerned residents turned out for our first CARES meeting
at the Senior Citizen Building Monday night. CARES chairman
Pat Fitzsimmons brought the crowd up to speed on events, with
input by other CARES members
Guest speaker Paul Rubin gave the crowd a lot to think about
with his scientific rebuttal to information presented in the
Shott mining proposal. The crowd had quite a few questions.
Many were answered. The one's that couldnt be answered became
new inquiries for CARES volunteers
